Independence Day, April 17 2012

On this day 66 years ago (April 17, 1946), Syria claimed her independence after a long, brutal struggle against the French colonists.

Today the struggle for independence continues – not from an outside colonial power, rather from a family mafia that has manipulated and abused the country, her people and resources for over 40 years.

As a protester from Hama put it back in July: “Syria is colonized by its own sons”.

And with that thought in mind, just as we commemorate April 17th and the sacrifices of our forefathers who fought to establish the modern state of Syria, March 15th will be marked as a day of mourning for the tens of thousands who sacrificed themselves in the pursuit of an Assad-free Syria grounded on the ideals of freedom, justice, dignity.

Free Syria.
